What You Should Know About Persistent Pain

Persistent pain can last for months – or even years – it causes a lot of stress to the patient and loved ones.

Persistent pain is more complex than your normal pain. Because this ongoing pain is still produced by the brain even if your body is healed.

This pain is less about what happens about the body – it’s more about the sensitivity of the nervous system.

To figure out what’s going on, it’s necessary to retrain the brain and nervous system.

This is why we use the multidisciplinary approach.

How we help you manage persistent pain

Persistent pain is best managed with a multidisciplinary approach called the biopsychosocial approach.

We combine medical, physical & psychological therapies across our services for your treatment.

Our program supports adults of all ages and life stages to understand pain, identify management strategies and set realistic goals to progress ongoing recovery.

PLEASE NOTE

We do NOT prescribe or review your pain medication.

You will need to consult your doctor instead
or contact the Royal Darwin Hospital’s Chronic Pain Services.

We also have links to a Consultant Physician in Rehabilitation Medicine for medical input, as required.
